Does Swapping Make Coins “Clean”? An Honest Threat Model

There is a persistent belief that running coins through a swap makes them "clean." It is worth dismantling carefully, because acting on the wrong version of it gets people hurt. The accurate answer is: a swap changes what is traceable, not whether you can be linked. Those are different things, and the difference is the whole game.

What "clean" even means

People use the word to mean two very different things:

A swap can help enormously with the first and do nothing for the second. Conflating them is the classic mistake.

What a transparent-to-transparent swap does

Swapping, say, one transparent coin for another (BTC to LTC) through a service breaks the direct on-chain link: the BTC goes in, different LTC comes out, and there is no single chain edge connecting them. But:

So transparent-to-transparent obfuscates, but it is fragile and leaves the endpoints public.

Where Monero actually changes the picture

A hop through Monero is stronger, because Monero itself has no transparent trail to correlate:

This is why "a Monero hop" is meaningfully different from "a swap." Monero removes the on-chain thread that other coins leave lying around.

Where links survive no matter what

Here is the part the "clean coins" myth ignores:

The honest threat model

Ask two questions, not one: is the on-chain trail broken? and am I linked off-chain anyway? A Monero hop can give you a strong "yes" to the first. Only your own OPSEC — how the coins entered, how you connect, where they exit — answers the second. Coins are never "clean" in the absolute sense the myth implies; they are more or less linkable depending on both the chain and your behavior.

Treat any tool, service, or coin that promises absolute "clean" coins as a warning sign. The realistic goal is a broken on-chain trail plus disciplined endpoints — and being clear-eyed that legal obligations apply to you regardless of how unlinkable the coins are.
